Check out comedian Bo Burnham's live show if you haven't already. It starts off pretty mental and continues on with high energy which is hectic and also very hilarious. There are a lot of impressive musical numbers in there and even an amazing poem about sluts. Not safe for work or intended for dopes who get offended easily. Dopes.

Discopath

Happy Hallowe'en! Went to see a movie last weekend as part of Horrorthon called 'Discopath' - it's about a guy who gets an uncontrollable urge to kill whenever he hears disco music. It's set in New York and Montreal in the 70s and it is flipping awesome. It's the perfect mix of horror, comedy and sweet disco tunes! Not sure if it was supposed to be as amusing and schlocky as we thought it was but we all loved it. Some amazing gore and creepiness balanced out with amazing Beastie Boy style cops, fast paced action (the movie flew by at only 80 mins) and a load of lesbians thrown in for good measure. Not for everyone of course, but it was basically my dream movie! We might have to show this at a future Swooner Movie Night!

Swooner Movie Nights: Dave Chapelle's Block Party

Last month, at the third Swooner movie night, in association with Portobello Picturehouse, we screened Dave Chapelle's Block Party. Back in 2006 Chapelle organised a massive, free, hip-hop party in Brooklyn and got everyone ever to perform at it - Kanye, Mos Def, The Roots, Erykah, Dead Prez, Common and a load of others too. Directed by Michel Gondry and put together really well, it not only has amazing musical performances but also hilarious segments with Chapelle telling jokes and just generally being amazing. If you haven't seen it I'd highly recommend it, and lucky for you it is being screened in the Lighthouse Cinema as part of their music documentary series on Saturday 5th October. Swooner Movie Nights: Daft Punk's Interstella 5555

Getting swept up in the current Daft Punk fervour, Swooner Rather Than Hater and Portobello Picturehouse showed 'Daft Punk's Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem' last week. It's a beautifully animated tale of some music lovin' space aliens who get kidnapped because their tunes are so damn rad, all set to Daft Punk's album Discovery. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend checking it out. The full movie is on Youtube:

The Wizard (1989) revisited

I remember being obsessed with this movie and renting it out over and over. To avoid his younger (possibly autistic) brother Jimmy being put in an institution, Fred Savage runs away with him to California. They pick up a sassy chick in a train station whereupon they realise Jimmy is amazing at Nintendo. So the three of them hitch across a few states to Reno to win $50,000 at 'Video Armageddon' all the while being chased by their Dad (Beau Bridges), eldest brother (Christian Slater) and also a pesky P.I. their stepdad hired. Along the way they meet Lucas, Jimmy's main rival for the prize. He has 97 Nintendo games and is good at all of them. You can imagine how impressed I was.

"Just keep your power gloves off her, pal, huh?" - but with lines like that, quality nonetheless. If you haven't seen the movie before, be warned. It's TERRIBLE. But, if like me, you watched it as a kid, were big into Nintendo (still am) and like things that are so ridiculous they are amazing, you should check it out.

Swooner Movie Nights: Ivory Tower

Swooner just had its first movie night in association with Portobello Picturehouse. We showed 'Ivory Tower' - a bizarre comedy about chess written by and starring Tiga and Chilly Gonzales. It is about as ridiculous as it sounds, with amazing Chilly Choons throughout. My friend Zonja and I watched it and laughed our asses off. It's a pretty bizarre flick, but if you like Chilly or Tiga or Peaches, or chess, or the concept of jazz chess, or chess puns, or any combination of the above, or are even just quite drunk on a Saturday night, give it a go. And it's got Chilly's tunes throughout, so that's a winner. Chess we can!

Paul Kalkbrenner - Berlin Calling / DEMF live set

Look at his mirror balls shine!

I got the Berlin Calling DVD for my friend Paul at Christmas and we only just watched it a couple of weeks ago. I knew the soundtrack would be good but I didn't expect it to be a great film as well. Kalkbrenner plays Ickarus, a DJ trying to produce a new album while struggling with drug problems. It moves along at a fair clip punctuated with deadly tunes. And Kalkbrenner can ACT. I loved it. We kept turning the volume up when a song came on. It got pretty loud. I'd recommend watching it before you go out, because you're going to want to go out after anyway.
