Moondragon: Man And Machine

Haven't had a chance to do any swooning over tunes on here of late so apologies about that. However a new Twitter follower yesterday intrigued me with their bio: "Moondragon is a synth-heavy 1980s inspired music project themed around impressive machines and the people who pilot them." Quality synthy 80s movie vibes. Right up Swooner Street, check it out!

Any fans of Starcadian or Robots With Rayguns that I've posted about before should enjoy.

Moondragon is Troy Simpson from Florida.

The Boogie Cartel: The Leisure Centre Mix Vol. 09

NOTE: I posted this up last week and it subsequently went missing from Soundcloud - but the lovely people at The Leisure Centre told me it was on Mixcloud too - so here it is again for your listening pleasure!

Just came across The Leisure Centre mix series - not too sure what it's all about but it seems to involve 80s aerobics and synths and dancing, so naturally I was curious. And then I saw Swooner faves The Boogie Cartel have contributed so I became extremely interested. Quality 80s beats, funk and disco, including a sweet edit of one of my favourite 80s vibes, 'No Favors' by Temper. Looking forward to checking out the other mixes in the series.

Tracklist:
Romel Westwood - Through With You
Janette Renee - I'm Gonna Be Your Lover
H & D - I'll Take You
Barbara Roy - Gotta See You Tonight
Lemuria - Thunder in Your love
Sha-Lor - I'm in Love
No Favors - Butcher edit
Arnold - Take Some Time
J Slyck - Talk To Me
Veronica - So In Love

Michael Baker - Don't You Want My Lovin'

I've posted a couple of other amazing Boogie Cartel mixes check 'em out here. If you haven't checked out The Boogie Cartel on soundcloud yet you are missing out. There also might be a Swooner mix from them on the way!

Speaking of 80s aerobics vibes, check out this amazing tune and video by Starcadian - set in a dystopian past or possibly future where contestants must dance ... or die!!

Life lessons from Mr.T

I pity the fool who doesn't watch all these videos. Mr. T shows you how to 'recoup' if you fall in public - avoid embarrassment by turning that fall into the beginning of a sweet ass breakdance move:

This is from from Mr T's movie 'Be Somebody Or Be Somebody's Fool' which is over the top 80s with Mr. T tackling such issues as shyness, style ('table the label, wear your own name'), treating your mother right, doing exercise, breakdancing, rapping, making friends, reading and daydreaming - everything a kid needs for a happy balanced life.

In this clip, New Edition sing about not succumbing to peer pressure in an amazingly catchy synthy tune. And pleasingly, they are singing about peer pressure while dancing on a pier.

You can watch the whole thing on Youtube:

Of particular note is the fashion show, Mr T's dance lesson at 22'30" and a particularly inappropriate synthy tune about working out at 32'.

And on a separate note: this is an anti-drugs rap by Mr. T and Kool Keith. Kool Keith makes drugs sound kind of cool though by name checking all the famous people who took them, although I am sure that wasn't his intention:

Janet Jackson performing 'Control' at the 1987 American Music Awards

Amazing video of Janet Jackson performing 'Control' at the American Music Awards in 1987. Such a great dance and set up. Love the tune as well.  I'd love a Perseus or Cyril Hahn type to work their magic on it:

This is the original video which is also pretty sweet, featuring some nice trenchcoat / keytar action. It won a Soul Train Award for best R'n'B/rap video in 1988:

I posted a video of Prince accepting his AMAs in 1985, check it out here if you haven't seen it before. it's pretty amusing. Note the single rose he carries.

David Byrne 'In The Future' live - 1988

In 1985, David Byrne composed an album called 'Music For The Knee Plays' for a seemingly outlandish opera called 'The Civil Wars' by Robert Wilson. He recorded it live for the BBC in 1988 with Les Miserables brass band and this is one song from it, 'In The Future'. I'm not sure what's going on but I highly approve:

You can watch the whole thing live in parts on youtube. It is pleasingly bizarre with gorgeous brass and odd spoken word throughout; start with part one here, if you fancy it.

The whole opera thing sounds amazingly mental; according to Wikipedia: "The Civil Wars was conceived as a single daylong piece of music theatre to accompany the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Six different composers from six different countries were to compose sections of Wilson's text inspired by the American Civil War. After initial premieres in their countries of origin, the six parts were to be fused in one epic performance in Los Angeles during the games, a parallel to the internationalist ideals of the Olympic movementThe premiere of the full work was cancelled when funding failed to materialize (despite the Olympic Committee's offer of matching funds) and deadlines were not met." 3 sweet Alfonso Ribeiro videos

"You're next"

Came across this photo of Alfonso Ribeiro ( aka Carlton Banks) with Michael Jackson a while ago - they were in a Pepsi commercial together. Never realised Alfonso was a proper 80s child star:

He also released this single (it sounds like it's been recorded from a wonky record player!)
