Hallowe'en at The Sugar Club

Kiwi Live at The Nest: 4 hour disco set

This is one of the best disco sets I've ever heard. And considering the company I keep, that's saying something. Gets super 80s and funky and disco space lasery, especially in the last hour. SO good. I am sure that was a quality night in The Nest. It's  over a year old, but if you haven't heard it, check it out. Making that wintery day fly. 

I've been listening to lots of Kiwi since my Tiny Choons co-host played his amazing tune 'The Guanako Haka' (below) on our last show. Check it out here. It's SO good. And not in any way disco, so the 4 hour set above was very unexpected in his soundcloud feed. Although I did just look up his Facebook page and under 'genre' it says 'fuck genres' - which may explain it. I love anyone who can lash out the beats but also seriously appreciate the disco vibe!

Posted about Palmbomen II recently and he was just on Beats In Space yesterday doing a live set. Definitely a current favourite. Lo-fi and housey and soft synthy but also not really sounding like anything else I've heard before, easy to get lost in these blissed out island vibes, and then there's some absolute whopper bangin' tunes towards the end. Would love to see him live!

Josh Homme does a great Arnold Schwarzenneger impression. This is a suprisingly nerdy episode of Nerdist but well worth a listen. They talk about Bill Murray a lot and Homme is really cool, not to mention charming. Swoon.

Chilly Gonzales live with The Radio Symphony Orchestra

This must be the best gig all of those people have ever been to, forever. I saw him live last year with one piano in a venue with really crummy sound and it was one of the highlights of my life. If you ever get a chance to see him, DO IT.

Dan Deacon live at Primavera Sound 2013

"Why didn't I learn Spanish? I took it for five fucking years in high school!"

Dan Deacon played Primavera Sound Festival recently and if you have ever seen him live before you will know how nuts it can be. He is such a charismatic bastard, with such mental, savage tunes. Saw him in Whelan's earlier this year and had the joy of watching it from upstairs so could fully appreciate his two unbelievably amazing drummers and the crowd games and dancing below and didn't have to get involved with all the madness on a physical level. It's a commitment to do so, and having done it twice before I was glad of the opportunity to watch from above like a fragile, hungover, non-omnipresent god, and the show was possibly even more enjoyable from the different perspective. But just listening to this, I am sure it was amazing being there. Too bad there's no video. G'wan the MOON!

Lazpod Live #1

This is the first of a live Lazpod series Damian Lazarus is doing - this one was recorded in Hong Kong to celebrate Chinese New Year - well worth a listen if you like any of his regular Lazpods, always a bananas selection of stuff, old timey songs along with some whopper tracks. Includes short interviews with Jason Swamy (the Robot Heart guy) and Subb-an (Crosstown Rebels) who plays some sweet tunes; makes for good radio if you want something a little different:

Francesco Tristano live at RoBOT Festival 2012

Francesco Tristano played a festival called RoBOT in Bologna in Italy in earlier this year, listen below. It's a whole lotta live, piano-based amazingness. Tristano is nothing if not a little experimental. His roots are in classical music and dare I say it... jazz.. - but PLEASE don't let that put you off at ALL. He's from Luxembourg but went to Juillard in New York where he learned classical music and then went clubbing. He releases classical music also but his heart seems to be in piano playing and beats. Lots of 'em. SWOON. Throw him on the MUST SEE LIVE list.

I first heard about Francesco Tristano as John Talabot remixed a tune by a band called Aufgang (check that remix out here) and as I am mildly obessed with John Talabot I looked Aufgang up. Tristano is in Aufgang* and I subsequently found this video of him playing piano live on stage with Carl Craig up the back waiting to throw in some beats. A version of this tune called 'The Melody' is in the live set above. To this day it is possibly one of the best things I have ever come across on the internet. Check this out, it's one of my most watched youtube videos ever:

More Night Plane - live Le Bain set and new 'Heartbeat' E.P.

Check out this great live set Night Plane did for Le Bain night club in New York a couple of months ago - "these are all my tunes, I do a live PA. Exceptions: whatever the first tune is, which is from the end of zev's set. hey chica at 29:30 is a derrick carter remix of tony senghore which I just like having in my set. and the beach house tune at the end is my illegal bootleg re-edit" - some lovely, quality deep house and includes his new tune 'Heartbeat' just out on Soul Clap records, a more rock-based house tune. Very enjoyable set:

The Beardytron 5000 - Beardyman live in India October 2012

SO. Beardyman has spent 6 years designing new kit with a man called Dave, and has called said kit The Beardytron 5000. He used it for this gig he did in India. "It can do things no other looper in the world can do, small but vital advances which are fundamental to allowing a complex and dynamic looping based live-production performance possible." For more info on the kit check it here. The set is mental as usual. Completely banging, rapping, covering, joking, singing - if you are a fan at all it's well worth a listen.

Have stayed up way too late watching this on occasion. No idea what sort of equipment he is using but he is going to town on it like a man possessed. Possessed by fucking awesomeness. In between slugs of beer. What a legend. And a dreamboat to boot. How can he make songs so hauntingly beautiful yet so fucking banging at the same time?! Too bad you can't hear the crowd, I'd say they were going flip mode. Now,  be warned, the sound cuts out for a second around 6'30" but stick with it, it's only for a moment and then it really gets going.

Tiger & Woods at Montreux Jazz Festival 2012

I give out about jazz a good bit, mostly because this one time, I went to France to see Four Tet and he played a load of jazz, but it seems the line up at the Montreux Jazz Festival was pretty good. This is Tiger & Woods set, very funky dancing and disco tunes, I'd say it was whopper: a bunch of their tunes including 'Don't Hesitate' and 'Dr. Burner', and their sweet remix of my favourite Holy Ghost! tune 'Hold My Breath' among others. Kool Clap's set from Villette Sonique

I love Kool Clap's sound, upbeat and happy, hip hop influenced. I posted a show he did for Red Bull Music Academy Radio before but they seem to have reconfigured their site and a lot of their content is gone. Which is a damn shame.
