Don Pimpon - Around The World

SO, Sesame Street in Spain is called Barrio Sésamo and one of the characters is called Don Pimpon. I'm not sure, but despite the sweet hip hop name, I think he is some kind of farmer / owl, and he hangs out with a hedgehog called Espineta. Anyway, some genius made this video and my Spanish (but predictably human) friend Lucia showed it to me ages ago. I love it.

Q-Tip - The Needle Drop

This is a very slick video, have been meaning to post it here for so long. Q-Tip at a sesh, fucking around with a single record, playing and looping Bobby Rush's 'Chicken Head' while his mates hang out - including Kanye West who is actually smiling and saying things like 'In all my life I ain't never seen anyone do that' - check it out if you haven't seen it before. He is so great!

Life lessons from Mr.T

I pity the fool who doesn't watch all these videos. Mr. T shows you how to 'recoup' if you fall in public - avoid embarrassment by turning that fall into the beginning of a sweet ass breakdance move:



This is from from Mr T's movie 'Be Somebody Or Be Somebody's Fool' which is over the top 80s with Mr. T tackling such issues as shyness, style ('table the label, wear your own name'), treating your mother right, doing exercise, breakdancing, rapping, making friends, reading and daydreaming - everything a kid needs for a happy balanced life.

In this clip, New Edition sing about not succumbing to peer pressure in an amazingly catchy synthy tune. And pleasingly, they are singing about peer pressure while dancing on a pier.

Of particular note is the fashion show, Mr T's dance lesson at 22'30" and a particularly inappropriate synthy tune about working out at 32'.

And on a separate note: this is an anti-drugs rap by Mr. T and Kool Keith. Kool Keith makes drugs sound kind of cool though by name checking all the famous people who took them, although I am sure that wasn't his intention:

Les Rythmes Digitales live performances (1999)

Came across this clip of some old Les Rythmes Digitales performances, definitely brings you back to a certain time and place. 'Lucifer Rising' plays til just after 4 minutes, then there's some interviews and a pretty amusing, amazingly exuberant performance of 'Hey You What's That Sound' with a massive keytar at about 5'30'- check it out:

The Wizard (1989) revisited

I remember being obsessed with this movie and renting it out over and over. To avoid his younger (possibly autistic) brother Jimmy being put in an institution, Fred Savage runs away with him to California. They pick up a sassy chick in a train station whereupon they realise Jimmy is amazing at Nintendo. So the three of them hitch across a few states to Reno to win $50,000 at 'Video Armageddon' all the while being chased by their Dad (Beau Bridges), eldest brother (Christian Slater) and also a pesky P.I. their stepdad hired. Along the way they meet Lucas, Jimmy's main rival for the prize. He has 97 Nintendo games and is good at all of them. You can imagine how impressed I was.

"Just keep your power gloves off her, pal, huh?" - but with lines like that, quality nonetheless. If you haven't seen the movie before, be warned. It's TERRIBLE. But, if like me, you watched it as a kid, were big into Nintendo (still am) and like things that are so ridiculous they are amazing, you should check it out.

This is a very enjoyable podcast for the high-brow frenchy electro fest, Nuit-Sonores, from Matias Aguayo: house beats with a little bit of disco on the outside, with a slightly bangin' creamy middle.

Reggie Watt's TED talk

I'm not going to lie to you, I have NO idea what I just watched, but I know I liked it. I only realised this existed today because I follow Reggie Watts on Instagram and one of his other followers mentioned it in the comments. I've been neglecting TED. Need to get re-involved if this is what they are getting up to lately. Reggie takes the absolute piss out of TED but in the most endearing way with some bizarre musical pieces in the midst. Also, sweet jumper:

Talking Heads live in Rome, 1980

I've watched Stop Making Sense a lot. I had it on DVD and used to watch it after nights out. And then the good folk of Lighthouse Cinema showed it on a Saturday night and we danced in the aisles, one of the best things ever. If you haven't seen it, you need it in your life; check it out here. I'd never seen this concert though, Talking Heads live in Rome in 1980. It's a lot less stylized, but just as emotive and brilliant, particularly the performance of Born Under Punches.
