Flight Facilities Triple J mix 4: 2002 - 2012 for download!

Me, right now, listening to this mix.

In case you missed it the last few weeks, Flight Facilities are Triple J's Saturday night mix residents for October so they've made 4 mixes, each one covering a different decade. (This last one is 2002 - 2012). They have gone to amazing lengths for each mix, each set is chronological in order with classic tunes and modern edits, and cut with news reports of the time so it's like an awesome musical history lesson. They have been putting them together since April, and you can check out the insane amount of research they did here.

This last mix has about 80 tracks in it and is like being driven around my own memory in a mesmerising musical Delorean. I can't even express how much I am enjoying it. IT HAS EVERYTHING. Well played FF.

New Aeroplane mix - October 2012. Grr.

It enrages me slightly that this mix is so fucking good. He played here recently and I thought it was a very uninspired and frustratingly lame set. It never kicked off despite a totally up for it crowd, due to every song sounding the same. Not to mention he looked like the unhappiest DJ in the world, sipping on his champagne (literally) and sighing (literally) his way through his set. Boo. He was obviously saving his energy and/or enthusiasm for his new Aeropop project. His upcoming (amazing) single 'In Her Eyes' on the new label is in this mix, along with a load of other whopper tunes, including a Claude von Stroke remix of 'Infinity', a tune I posted about previously here. Ah, I can't stay mad. This mix is really good.

My complaining about a DJ reminds me I just started on twitter and my new favourite thing is @Djs Complaining. (Pictured above.)

1. Mayer Hawthorne - No Strings ( RAC Remix )
2. Mock & Toof - My Head

Chilly Gonzales: mini-mix and movie

Chilly Gonzales made a sweet mini-mix called Pianist Envy. If you sign up to his mailing list you can download it. Fair swap! Quality hip hop and Chilly piano / soundbites, not to mention a very motivational quote from the lesser known Rocky VI (a.k.a.Rocky Balboa), so it has my attention. Go here: chillygonzales.com/mixtape/.

Also, in case you missed it, Chilly Gonzales is in a pretty remarkable movie called 'Ivory Tower' with Tiga and Peaches about 2 competitive chess playing brothers. Check out the trailer:

My friend Zonja and I watched it and laughed our asses off. It's a pretty bizarre flick, but if you like Chilly or Tiga or Peaches, or chess, or the concept of jazz chess, or chess puns, or any combination of the above, or are even just quite drunk on a Saturday night, give it a go. And it's got Chilly's tunes throughout, so that's a winner. Chess we can!

He plays The Sugar Club on Thursday December 6th. Get tickets here.
His latest album 'Solo Album II' is available at chillygonzales.com/.

I am all up in Holy Ghost!'s grill at the moment. (Well. Ever since Cosmic Kids remixed their tune 'Hold My Breath' - check it here if you don't know it already, it's amazing.) This is Holy Ghost!'s Red Bull Headphone Highlights - the New York pair talk us through some of the tunes that have influenced them and their sweet disco style. It includes a couple of their edits and some De La Soul and Sister Sledge. And they seem like lovely young fellas. Tiger & Woods at Montreux Jazz Festival 2012

I give out about jazz a good bit, mostly because this one time, I went to France to see Four Tet and he played a load of jazz, but it seems the line up at the Montreux Jazz Festival was pretty good. This is Tiger & Woods set, very funky dancing and disco tunes, I'd say it was whopper: a bunch of their tunes including 'Don't Hesitate' and 'Dr. Burner', and their sweet remix of my favourite Holy Ghost! tune 'Hold My Breath' among others. Enjoy:

Hall & Oates - I Can't Go For That
Queen & David Bowie - Under Pressure

I posted another amazing (non decade) mix they made here, check it out.

This mix is not mine, I just stuck it on my Mixcloud so people could listen to it. If you want me to take it down email me at kt@swoonerratherthanhater.com.

Kalkbrenning mix

More Kalkbrenner; some smart thinkin' guy mixed a bunch of Paul and Fritz' tunes together into a dreamy Kalkbrenner ragout. Nothing more to say, if you like the ol' Kalkbrenner bros, you'll like this. Ragou'vih:

I posted previously about Paul Kalkbrenner's film 'Berlin Calling' and put up a mix he did at DEMF 2011, check it out here.

David Byrne 'In The Future' live - 1988

In 1985, David Byrne composed an album called 'Music For The Knee Plays' for a seemingly outlandish opera called 'The Civil Wars' by Robert Wilson. He recorded it live for the BBC in 1988 with Les Miserables brass band and this is one song from it, 'In The Future'. I'm not sure what's going on but I highly approve:

You can watch the whole thing live in parts on youtube. It is pleasingly bizarre with gorgeous brass and odd spoken word throughout; start with part one here, if you fancy it.

The whole opera thing sounds amazingly mental; according to Wikipedia: "The Civil Wars was conceived as a single daylong piece of music theatre to accompany the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Six different composers from six different countries were to compose sections of Wilson's text inspired by the American Civil War. After initial premieres in their countries of origin, the six parts were to be fused in one epic performance in Los Angeles during the games, a parallel to the internationalist ideals of the Olympic movementThe premiere of the full work was cancelled when funding failed to materialize (despite the Olympic Committee's offer of matching funds) and deadlines were not met." Swooner Exclusive Mix no.1: Chewy's Awesome Fuckin' Welles Disco Mix

It's here! The first ever Swooner Exclusive Mix! It's a super-funky disco mix by Chewy, which is apt, considering this mix series was his idea in the first place. He suggested it on the way to Body and Soul Festival earlier this year while I was getting us only slightly lost. We were listening to Greg Wilson's Essential Mix and reminiscing about all the sweet tunes we used to listen to when we were younger. I immediately signed him up to be the first Swooner special guest and here we are! A mix for dancing with a couple of those old sweet tunes thrown in from one of the purveyors of Dublin's patented Disco Brunch. Thanks Chewy!
