Swooner on YogaHub Radio 11.11.13

Matt from theyogahub.ie asked me to pick the tunes for his radio show last week. In theory it was a chill out set, but it didn't really work out like that. (It's a pretty random selection of tunes I really like, with a chill out song at the end!) Thanks for having me Matt!

Tune into YogaHub Radio every Monday afternoon from 2 - 4 pm on www.radiomade.ie and follow him on www.mixcloud.com/Yogafaces for more!

I've also put these tracks together in a Spotify Playlist in case you are that way inclined:

Sunset Blood - the debut album by Starcadian

"I make ear movies" - very apt description of these tunes

My mate Stu over at the deadly www.wunderground.ie got me onto this album 'Sunset Blood' by Starcadian. It is basically my dream music. Synthy, 80s dance vibes with space lasers and robot voices, and amazing, gorgeous disco-ey tunes, and then some epic movie music near the end. At the risk of being lazy and reductive I'm just going to say that if you like Breakbot, or Daft Punk's Discovery album, or Drive, or Lasertom's debut album I posted about recently, you should check this out. (If you don't like any of those things, you are probably in the wrong bit of the internet.)

Stream and buy it here: starcadian.bandcamp.com/album/sunset-blood

I think he killed somebody with a Commodore 64:

Stream John Talabot's DJ Kicks

Been waiting for ages for this! - You can stream John Talabot's DJ Kicks mix here. It's quality!

"It's not a mix to dance to," says Talabot. "It starts really slow, 90bpm or something like that. It has some dance tracks towards the beginning, but as it progresses it chills out. It's not an easy mix. It's quite strange. It doesn't really build up in the way many mixes do. A lot of the tracks I've never played in a club because they wouldn't work. It's definitely not a club mix. When I DJ in a club at 4AM I play a dance-oriented set, but I wanted my DJ Kicks mix to show a different side of me, where I come from and what my influences are." - from the DJ Kicks site

This tv documentary is about how mental Richard Harris, Oliver Reed, Keith Moon, Ozzy Osbourne and even the snooker player Alex Higgins were. It was made in the late 90s so Liam Gallagher is held up as the current bad boy. Highly amusing. The whole doc is entertaining and also bananas, and sometimes sad. G'wan the lads. Richard Harris, what a legend.

I've posted a couple of other good documentaries - check out this one about Björk and David Attenborough, and this one about Nile Rodgers.

Drift - the debut album by Lasertom

Gorgeous album artwork by davedarcy.com/

So, I don't usually write much on here, I prefer to let the music speak for itself. It should go without saying that if it's on Swooner, I think it's ace. But every once in a while something comes along and 'I think it's ace' is an insufficient amount of words to describe it. The album 'Drift' by Lasertom is one such thing. So here are some other words: Beats. Space lasers. Beautiful. Darker beats. Epic. Layers. More space lasers. Groove. Dance. Repeat.

It's rare for me these days to be taken with an album in its entirety as opposed to just liking a few tracks. And although I have my favourite songs on it (No Play and Norwegian Pine today), Drift as a whole is quite moreish and satisfying and seems almost cinematic in its cosmic journey. Reminiscent of some of Lindstrøm's tunes (albeit less frantic than most of his) it could be the soundtrack to an amazing space movie - à la Interstellar 5555.

So yes, it is way more than ace. But now. Enough words! Use your ears! Decide for yourself:

If you can't see the above box, click here

I saw Lasertom (aka Dublin's Simon Cullen,) live at Body and Soul last summer and it was definitely one of my highlights. If you ever get a chance to check him out I'd highly recommend it. The album release party will be in The Twisted Pepper on November 29th. Go to Lasertom on Facebook for updates.
